This was our first match of the season for the Wanderers and with the last minute retirement of Flick, our new girl Zoe deciding to play for Bury FC (silly girl!) and our Bronya not being able to play, we were down to only seven players.
Flixton started the match by taking the lead with a quick goal taking our Wanderers by surprise. However, some excellent passing between Leah and Becks and a through ball from Beth led to a stunning strike from Jenny into the top left corner to level the scores.
Just before half time Flixton applied pressure and scored a further two goals leaving the half time score at 3 – 1 to Flixton.
The second half and a change of formation. Megan in goal and Amy, Jenny and Leah in defence with Eleanor, Beth and Becks up front. With no substitutes, hot weather and 3 – 1 down, a comeback was going to take something special. The Wanderers didn’t disappoint. Two hard fought goals from Beth and amazing determination from all players gave us a well deserved 3 – 3 draw. Beth, the teams new captain, led by example and all players should be very proud of this effort.
A last minute penalty to Flixton had our heart pounding but Megan pulled off a superb fingertip save to push the ball onto the crossbar and away to safety.
Megan Brenchley got the oppositions vote for player of the match and Eleanor got my player of the match vote. However all seven girls deserved to go home with a trophy.
New kits looked good as well. Well done girls.
