After the disappointment of the opening day of the season when our opposition failed to turn up, the girls and parents were delighted to get the season started properly with a match against Gorse Hill.
With Carly as captain and goalkeeper, we kicked of expecting a tough match. With the experience of the many friendly games we played last season, it with good to see the team maintain their shape, particularly the defence being well marshalled by Shauna, with good assistance from Chloe, Rebecca and Anna.
The midfield pair had lots of running to do, and Isa and Zoe were both able to do this throughout the game. The first half saw Woodbank take an early lead through Emily’s reliable left foot. Emily repeated this a further three times in the first half, using her pace to gain the advantage and give Woodbank a four-goal lead.
However, it was not all one way traffic, Carly made a great save from a high shot that she pushed onto the crossbar. Anna replaced Carly in goal in the second half, and a fifth goal came when Woodbank pressure forced an own goal. Gorse Hill gained a consolation goal late on. There were no further goals, although Emily went close with a shot from the half way line that surprised everyone.
This was a really good performance from all the girls and any of them would have deserved the player of the match award, however this was given to Isa for her constant hard work, with the opposition giving the award to Emily for her four goals.
