After beating Cadishead 3 – 0 and Broadheath 6 – 2, the thought of making it three wins in a row by beating Urmston Meds was perhaps just asking too much. Was it?
Urmston Meds are a well organized team with a very strong defence who had previously beat us 4 – 0 and more recently 1 – 0 (last minute goal).
A lively start saw our Warriors go close with long distance efforts from both Megan F and Bronya. Any attempts from Urmston were quickly stopped with Beth, Anna and Bronya all playing outstandingly.
Fi’s long distance goal kicks caused the Urmston defence lots of problems and a couple of brilliant saves kept the half time score to 0 – 0.
Although Urmston played the better passing movements, our Warriors never looked likely to concede. Bronya was again superb. Beth made numerous shot stopping tackles and clearances. It was Anna that really impressed though. She was up against an Urmston player with both speed and skill. Anna was not to be intimidated and bravely stopped her again and again.
Five minutes to go and still 0 – 0. Although Emily, Hannah, Megan F and Soph had played well, we hadn’t really threatened to score. A scoreless draw would have been a great result. Wouldn’t it!! Soph had other ideas. Great play by Meg W to get the ball to Emily. A though pass to Meg F. Lovely interplay to get the ball to Soph and she was sprinting towards goal with two Urmston players closely behind. The goalie ran towards her and she unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top of the goal.
Game, Set and Match to Woodbank. A smile from ear to ear on Sophs face!
Fi got the opposition player award with a polished display. Anna got my player award for her great battling qualities.
Three wins in a row. Broadheath and Urmston Meds beaten. This is no more than our girls deserve for their great attitude and belief in themselves. Dave and I love managing our two teams and results like this make it so worthwhile. I know winning isn’t everything but it doesn’t half feel good when we do!!!!
Dare I say ---- ‘Bring on Man City’…..Gulp
