This was our first game of 2007 and who best to play in our first match – Man City Ladies!!
I am sure we all have strong opinions on the behaviour of the parents and managers of this team but I’m going to concentrate on our girls who displayed unrelenting effort, bravery and great team spirit.
Although our girls were on the defensive for most of the first half, we matched the physically stronger and older Man City team in all areas.
Anna, Beth, Meg W and Bronya stopped all Man City could throw at them. Hannah made some determined runs. Fi was superb with some stunning fingertip saves.
City finally broke the deadlock with a goal just before half time.
In the second half the heavy ground and Man City’s physical strength started to show. City scored another five goals to make the final score 6 – 0.
However there were some top performances today.
Sophie was outstanding and looked the most likely to score with one effort just clipping the post. She covered every blade of grass and never stopped running.
Megan F gave yet another display of determination and she improves with every match. This was rewarded with the opposition player award.
Emily gave a proper Captains performance leading the team with a display of effort, skill and determination.
However my Managers Player award went to Beth who tackled without regard to the physical size of some of the City players. Great performance Beth! Keep it up.
Our Woodbank Girls should hold their heads up high. Maybe the Man City parents and manager can learn from the professional attitude of our girls. For me there was only one winning team today and they weren't wearing a blue kit!!!
